We talk to broadcaster and GP, Dr Sarah Jarvis; consultant in infectious diseases, Dr Sarah Wakelin; and consultant paediatrician, Dr Gareth Tudor-Williams when your child breaks out in spots, about what do.
Call your Child’s Physician
In case you believe that you or your child has measles or chickenpox, call your doctor, especially if your son or daughter is under four weeks old, has infected skin blisters or is experiencing breathing problems or chest pains.
A red, spotty rash usually appears a few days later.
The outward symptoms of measles include fever, a red red eyes -brown spotty rash as well as sensitivity to light.
The incubation period for measles and both chickenpox is around 10 to 20 days.
Isolate your kid
When the spots are first noticed by you, call your kid’s nursery or school promptly. Both measles and chickenpox are highly infectious and your child should remain at home.

Cooling gels relieve scratching
Cooling gels, for example Virasoothe, don’t burn and are not unpleasant to use. ‘ Virasoothe helps to hydrate skin by drawing moisture up to the top, and cool itchy lesions,’ says Dr Wakelin.
Virasoothe supports healing by reducing infection and reduces the urge to scratch blisters. Long term scarring is reduced and an uncomfortable child will have the ability to sleep better.
This gel can safely be applied to both body and face and is available in drugstores. It is suitable for kids over 6 months old.
To help your youngster get to sleep, a sedating antihistamine could be useful before bed. Request your pharmacist for his or her advice about which products are appropriate for your own kid’s age-group.
